The long-awaited new album by San Francisco-based heavy psychedelic/acid rock band The Spiral Electric. Heaven is pianist/composer Pete Malinverni’s latest trio outing, featuring with Ben Allison, bass and Akira Tana, drums. Also featured on one guest selection each are Karrin Allyson (voice), Jon Faddis (trumpet) and Steve Wilson (alto saxophone). After the loss of his wife, singer Jody Sandhaus, and an (ultimately false) health scare of his own, Malinverni was inspired to make a recording of music originating from - and directed overtly to - the spirit. To that end, he’s chosen some American Spirituals, some Ellington compositions, one by Curtis Mayfield, another by Hungarian-Jewish martyr Hannah Senesh and an original Malinverni take on Psalm 23. The music is contemplative but joyful, too. It expresses a wonder at the life we live and a realization that, for those who choose to see it that way, this, indeed is Heaven.

Meaning the CD starts with 2 instrumental compositions and then is followed by 4 vocal songs featuring Tiffany Austin, then 4 selections from a new suite composed by Marcus Shelby called “Black Ball: The Negro Leagues and the Blues”, and then ends on “Mood Indigo” featuring Tiffany Austin once again. The CD begins with a nod to 2 personal influences&emdash;Charles Mingus and Duke Ellington. The 1st is an original arrangement by Marcus Shelby of Charles Mingus’s composition “Remember Rockefeller at Attica” and features a solo by pianist Matt Clark. The 2nd is Duke Ellington’s composition “On a Turquois Cloud” featuring Mads Tolling on violin. The original Ellington recording featured opera singer Kay Davis. The next 4 compositions, Begin the Beguine, Lullaby of Birdland, In my Solitude, and It’s Alright with Me all feature vocalist Tiffany Austin on original arrangements by Marcus Shelby.

Dirty Sidewalks don't just take sonic cues from the fuzzy haze of The Jesus and Mary Chain, the honed pop songcraft of Oasis or the rich vocal colors of The Beach Boys-they keep it in the family, too. Formed in 2010 by Erik Foster, older brother Evan Foster (of The Boss Martians and currently The Sonics) and longtime friend Evan O'Neil, the band plays anthemic tunes informed equally by 80's college rock, 90's Britpop, and 60's harmonies.

Around the year 2012, some NYC people who played reed instruments began to gather as frequently as possible, or weekly, to read gnarly multinational music, mostly composed by accordionist extraordinaire, Lee Tomboulian. Lee's influences come from Uruguay, where Maestro Hugo Fattoruso producer of his Circo: North/South Convergence CD; lives and reigns, Brazil, Armenia (his ancestral land), as well as Eastern Europe, the classical music of Europe and Russia, along with the classical music of the USA and Jazz. The music forms a fusion of these disparate influences, resulting in vibrant, dynamic textures, zany melodies, and diverse rhythmic grooves sourced from global meters. The group morphed and evolved through the years to its current incarnation: Lee on accordion, Carlos Cuevas on melodica, Janet Grice on bassoon, Anthony Smith on vibraphone, Cliff Schmitt on acoustic bass, Dave Silliman on percussion, with special guest Mino Cinelu adding his magic to these tracks. This may be the first recording released with this particular instrumentation, ever!

In “Visionary,” pianist and composer Daniel Szabo features an outstanding line-up of musicians such as Peter Erskine, Sara Andon, Bob Sheppard, Kim Richmond and Edwin Livingston. Szabo composed, arranged and orchestrated all of the pieces and played the piano. The pieces were conducted by Timothy Williams. The style of this new repertoire shows a blend of jazz, classical and film music idioms, robustly American yet genetically Hungarian.
