With his newest album, Liberation Time, McLaughlin draws from one of humanity's most fraught, uncertain epochs to produce music that gracefully reflects the uncertainty, vulnerability, and slowly awakening joy of our times. A direct response to the mandated restrictions imposed by the spread of Covid-19, the album is -- unusually for McLaughlin's recent projects -- not the work of one fixed ensemble. With physical proximity no longer a prerequisite, McLaughlin drew upon decades of experience as a bandleader to select musicians best suited to each composition. "As the Spirit Sings" introduces the album by contrasting churning rhythmic tension (stoked by drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and bassist Sam Burgess) with McLaughlin's soaring guitar figures -- all underpinned by Gary Husband's subtle, supportive piano. The knotty post-bop figures of "Right Here, Right Now, Right On" mark one of the most jazz-inflected performances McLaughlin has laid down in some time, featuring Nicolas Viccaro (drums), Jerome Regard (bass), Julian Siegel (tenor saxophone), and Oz Ezzeldin (piano). The sense of brotherhood that bonds McLaughlin's current 4th Dimension ensemble (McLaughlin, Husband, bassist Etienne Mbappe, and drummer Ranjit Barot) is on full display during "Lockdown Blues," a playful refraction examination of blues tropes first released last summer to benefit the Jazz Foundation of America. With vaccination campaigns now in full effect and a more promising tomorrow coming into view, Liberation Time's title track can be felt as visceral anticipation -- a rousing glimpse into an unbound future rich with possibilities. And while much of Liberation Blues revels in the sort of spontaneous interplay that has been denied by Covid restrictions, some of the album's most touching moments feature McLaughlin alone at the piano -- an instrument he has not recorded on since his 1973 collaboration with Carlos Santana, Love Devotion Surrender. Liberation Time is a product of its times, and yet it looks both forwards and backwards -- at once drawing upon memories of better days yet reaching for a new dawn. Looking back at the album's transcontinental sessions, McLaughlin concludes, "The wonderful thing about music is that you put the headphones on and you are all in the same room."

Roaring out of Brisbane, Australia in 1977 with the punk-era classic "(I'm) Stranded," the Saints, despite going through numerous incarnations, were a part of rock ‘n roll for more than 20 years, thanks mainly to their indefatigable leader (and founder) Chris Bailey. The Saints were to Australia what the Sex Pistols were to Britain, and the Ramones to America. Moreover, the Saints were blitzing the unsuspecting in their home of Brisbane in 1973, long before the Sex Pistols or the Ramones had even begun. Even today's punk fans are amazed at the sheer tenacity and outright fire of the title cut, "Nights in Venice," "One Way Street," and "Erotic Neurotic." Hear history burning. Original artwork, gatefold sleeve, lavender color vinyl reissue.

La-La Land Records, Royal Road Entertainment and Netflix proudly present three-time Academy Award-winning composer Michel Legrand's (Summer Of ‘42, The Thomas Crown Affair, Atlantic City) musical score to the acclaimed motion picture The Other Side Of The Wind, starring John Huston and directed by Orson Welles. As producers Frank Marshall and Filip Jan Rymsza painstakingly completed this unfinished Orson Welles film, they came upon a note in the master filmmaker's diary that indicated, "Call Legrand for the music." And so the producers did just that, and maestro Legrand honored the great Welles' request with a brilliant follow-up to his earlier effort for the director, "F for Fake." With The Other Side Of The Wind, Legrand weaves classical and jazz motifs into a score for both a Hollywood party and the experimental music for the "film within the film," capturing Welles' complex and experimental vision in a fitting final work of musical genius. Before his untimely passing in January 2019, Legrand personally chose the selections and sequencing for this album. The CD booklet contains a personal note from the composer.

A lot has happened since the last record, Greasy Kid's Stuff in 2001. Since then I've fathered two small boys into young men, beaten cancer. It's been about 17 years. I figured it was about the right time to put a Blues record out. My youngest son Johnny has joined the family business. This is his singing debut on this album and he was only 17 at the time of the recording. I'm excited to still be playing guitar, happy that people still want to see and hear me, and haven't thrown any rocks at me yet. This album was made in two days at Big Jon Atkinson's home studio in Hayward, California. It was recorded live to tape on two tracks using all analogue equipment, vintage microphones, and the brilliant technique of Jon Atkinson's recording. The album includes the expert playing of Kedar Roy on bass, Marty Dodson on drums, Mike Welch on piano/organ, Danny Michel on 2nd guitar, with the legendary Kim Wilson performing vocals on one song.

Notorious for his song ‘California Hippie Murders!’ - a ghoulish, harrowing, yodeling retelling of the infamous (Charles Manson masterminded) Tate-LaBianca slayings - Red River Dave was a genuine cowboy singing star turned tabloid balladeer. While ‘California Hippie Murders!’ might seem chilling and bizarre, within the body of ‘Red River Dave’ McEnery epic saga songs (collected here for the very first time), it makes perfect sense. The Moon landings, the kidnapping of heiress Patty Hearst, the Vietnam conflict, the assassination of JFK, the murder of young Emmett Till and Korean War ‘Manchurian Candidate’ brainwashing - all grist for the great Red River Dave Hillbilly song-mill.
Often cut within hours or days of the event and pressed as minuscule edition private 45s: the tall, flamboyant, ’Buffalo Bill’ bearded McEnery cut a dashing figure in his gold-sprayed cowboy boots and cracking lariat - as he hawked these handcrafted cuts from the boot of his steer-horned Cadillac.
Some sides presented here are so rare as to be near-mythical - you’ll hear Red River Dave wax about the death of Marilyn Monroe and the Bay of Pigs - in an eccentric and forgotten chronicle of the 20th century experience.

On September 15, Abstract Logix issues Live At Ronnie Scott’s – a souvenir of a sold-out, two-night stand at the beloved venue by John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension, recorded in March of 2017. In the 4th Dimension – Ranjit Barot (drums, konokol), Gary Husband (keyboards, drums), and Etienne M’Bappé (bass) – McLaughlin has gathered a band with the technical dexterity and soulful musicality to do ample justice to his vast catalog. They can follow him anywhere, and together on Live @ Ronnie Scott’s McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension explore everything from early Mahavishnu Orchestra classics to compositions from their most recent studio LP, Black Light.

This recording, taped in August of 1967, was the first release on the Nessa label. It was also the first recorded documentation of a quartet soon to be known as the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Two years later Lester Bowie, Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman and Malachi Favors ventured to Paris as a first step towards conquering the world. This 24 bit remaster, from the original half inch 4 track session tapes, restores the program as originally released for the first time on compact disc. 50th anniversary reissue of this classic free jazz session!
